I’m reading Levticus and recently stumbled upon something that was very interesting and wanted to share about it.

In Levticus, whenever an offering is made, for ex: Lev 3:4-5,4:9,7:4-5 See how it says the two kidneys and the fat shall be burnt on the altar. I understand the fatty portion since it’s one of the best parts of the meat and we should always give God our best but why Kidneys????

Eye-level view of an open Bible on a wooden table

I started researching and found something even strange. A verse that I know very well but failed to read the meaning behind it. Psa 7:9 says God will test our hearts and mind but in our bible next to mind there will a small asterisk and if you check out the word meaning it says kilya in Hebrew meaning kidneys or reins. Now I became curious and started finding verses with “mind” in them. Jer 11:20 says the Lord who tests the mind (kidneys) and heart, Rev 2:23 I am He who searches the minds (reins) and hearts. There are other places as well but I’m just trying to make my point.

Then I started to research about kidneys and found out that Hebrew tradition identity kidneys as an internal organ that is hidden deep inside the human body and correlated it with inner conscience.

When I got this understanding I was able to connect the dots as to how God does not only search our heart which denotes our emotions, understanding etc but also the kidneys which denote the inner conscience and hidden thoughts. This is why when the offering was made, God takes the heart and the kidneys which means when we submit ourselves we should not only submit the outward but also the inward hidden things and be a total surrender to God.
